Abstract

FHWA and its partner agencies advance highway safety through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP); however, State DOTs are increasingly implementing policies and procedures to incorporate safety performance assessments on other Federal-aid highway projects to assist them in making meaningful safety investments that yield optimal safety performance, thus contributing to reduced fatalities and serious injuries on their transportation systems. FHWA is requesting comments from the public, especially State DOTs, on a range of questions related to how the safety performance of Federal-aid projects should be assessed, and how to include mitigation measures to improve safety across Federal-aid projects.
