Abstract

This rulemaking would address Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2021 to 2026. This rulemaking proposes new CAFE standards for model years 2022 through 2026 and would amend existing CAFE standards for model year 2021 because they are no longer maximum feasible. The proposal would retain the model year 2020 standards (specifically, the footprint target curves for passenger cars and light trucks) through model year 2026, but comment is sought on a range of alternatives discussed throughout the proposal. This proposal is jointly developed with EPA, which is simultaneously proposing tailpipe carbon dioxide standards for the same vehicles covered by the same model years.
