May 17, 2006 Public Information and Records Integrity Branch Office of Pesticide Programs Docket number OPP-2005-0162 Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to supply comments regarding the benefits of the insecticide/nematicide carbofuran (trade name Furadan). The Agricultural Retailers Association, ARA, located in Washington, DC is the only national association representing retailers and distributors. ARA has about 455 member companies representing nearly 6,000 retail outlets across the U.S. Our members apply the majority of the crop input materials used by America's farmers. My name is James (Jim)Thrift, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Relations. I have 35 years of experience in the crop input sector and an Agronomy Degree from California State University, at Cal Poly. In order for the American Farmer to remain competitive in world wide agricultural markets, retailers need to be able to provide growers with all the best pest management tools possible. Thinking that new technologies to include Genetically Modified Organisms will make traditional pesticides obselette, is wrong. Proven chemical materials that have been in use for years have critical uses that will not be change in the near future. Pests are very adapable to lots of environmental situations that require the use of very selective insecticides. Furadan is an example of a proven environmentally sound material that needs to be available to retailers so America's farmers can fight insect outbreaks. Furadan is sucessfully used on fifteen U.S. crops every year and the ARA asks that it be allowed to remain a part of the growers IPM tool box.
