The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (Auto Innovators) appreciates the opportunity to provide comments in response to the September 19, 2024, Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to update the requirements and processes for individuals to request agency permission to have an air bag on-off switch installed in their vehicle. Please see attached.

Abstract

This notice proposes to amend 49 CFR Part 595, “Make Inoperative Exemptions,” Subpart B – Retrofit On-Off Switches for Air Bags, to remove the retrofit air bag on-off switch sunset date; revise the retrofit air bag on-off switch criteria and update the informational brochure and retrofit air bag on-off switch request form (Appendix A and B of Part 595); incorporate the request for retrofit air bag on-off switches for emergency vehicles into Subpart B, including a proposed request form as an Appendix to Part 595; and codify the process for requesting frontal air bag deactivation in limited situations in Subpart B.
