Abstract
Subject: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) No. 208: Occupant Crash Protection: Air Bags; Advanced Air Bags; On-Off Switch; Child Restraint; Warning Labels Abstract: Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposes amendments to NHTSA's occupant crash protection standard and child restraint standard to reduce the adverse effects of air bags, specially those on children. Eventually, either through market forces or government regulation, NHTSA expects that smart passenger side air bags will be installed in passengers cars and light trucks to mitigate these effects. For purposes of this document, the agency considers smart air bags to include any system that automatically prevents an air bag from injuring the two groups of children that experience has shown to be at special risk from air bags: infants in rear-facing seat, and children who are out-of-position (because they are unbelted or inproperly belted) when the air bag deploys.
