Members of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) are the leading companies engaged in the business of chemistry and apply the science of chemistry to make innovative products and services. More than $500 billion of chemistry products flow through the economy each year and are present in some form in nearly every facet of the American economy. In fact, over 96% of all manufactured goods such as plastics, rubber, synthetic textiles and components are directly touched by chemistry. In addition, the business of chemistry supports nearly 847,000 jobs nationwide. America's chemical industry uses natural gas both to heat and power our facilities and as a raw material that goes into thousands of consumer and industrial products. Many of these products make our economy more energy efficient, such as plastic parts for vehicles to reduce weight, house wrap, and building insulation. Given our industry's reliance on natural gas, our industry needs access to affordable and reliable domestic sources of natural gas. Chemical makers and other manufacturers simply cannot compete effectively in the global market if the cost and supply of one of our key inputs is either higher in cost or not readily available. America's energy needs require expanded access to domestic sources of natural gas and ACC urges expanded exploration in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Though increasing supply of these energy resources is essential, so too is a greater emphasis on energy efficiency efforts. ACC has long advocated for a balanced energy policy that includes efficiency, conservation, diversity such as renewables, carbon capture and sequestration, nuclear, combined heat and power, as well as expanded energy supply. A comprehensive energy policy – that includes further OCS exploration – can improve our industry's ability to compete globally, drive demand for American goods and services, and maintain America's job base, while at the same time improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
