Interested persons are invited to speak to the three specific questions raised in the Federal Register notice of June 12, 2001 at the public forums. If you have submitted a notice of intention to speak and would like to submit your written statement electronically, please enter it into the box below. You can type it in directly or prepare it in advance using a word processor and then cut and paste the text into the box. Please note that you may not attach materials such as studies or journal articles to your electronic statement. AIHA appreciates this opportunity to provide input to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on the important health and safety topic of ergonomics. AIHA is also appreciative of OSHA for scheduling public forums to discuss possible approaches to addressing ergonomic hazards in the workplace. I am a Senior Ergonomics Specialist with 20 years experience with 3M Company. I have been a member of AIHA for 25 years and actively involved in the AIHA Ergonomics Committee for nearly that long. I served as chair of the Ergonomics Committee from 1997-1998. I also earned certifications as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) in comprehensive practice in 1987 and Certification in Professional Ergonomics (CPE) in 1993. My written comments have been formally submitted for the record and can be reviewed in detail at a later time. At the conclusion of this oral summary, I would happy to answer your questions.The American Industrial Hygiene Association, founded in 1939, is the worlds largest association of occupational and environmental health professionals and our members play an important role on the front line of worker health and safety. The members of AIHA come from government, labor, industry, academia and private business. AIHA is the most diverse professional association dedicated solely to the prevention of workplace fatalities, injury and illness. AIHAs goal is to bring "good science" and the benefit of our workplace experience to the public policy process directed at worker safety and health.AIHA has long placed great importance on workplace ergonomics improvements and elimination of musculo-skeletal disorders, or MSDs. AIHA has demonstrated this for many years in professional conferences, publications and input on public policy.
