Dear U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (ATTN: HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Paul L. Reed and U.S. Department of Agriculture Acting Deputy Administrator Kelley Scanlon), Attached please find 4,738 comments from Center for Biological Diversity supporters urging the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services to adopt the scientific advisory committee's recommendations for plant-based diets in the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The scientific report of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends reducing consumption of meat, poultry, and eggs and prioritizing consumption of plant-based protein sources like beans, peas, and lentils, moving plant-based proteins above animal-based proteins in the protein category. This is consistent with a climate-friendly, healthy, and environmentally sustainable dietary pattern that will support food system security and the wellbeing of all Americans. Thank you.

Abstract

The Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture solicit written comments on the Scientific Report of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Each edition of the Dietary Guidelines builds upon the preceding edition, with the scientific justification for revisions informed by the Scientific Report of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, Dietary Reference Intakes, existing Federal guidance and consideration of federal agency input and public comments. Once the final Scientific Report is published online, the public will have 60 days to provide written comments to HHS and USDA to inform the development of the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This public comment period closes on the 60th day at 11:59 p.m. ET.
