Rigoberto Delgado Chairman of the National Organic Standards Board I am writing to encourage the National Organic Standards Board to ensure that the USDA's organic program fully implements and enforces the natural resource and biodiversity standard (§205.200). Globally and nationally, the loss of native biodiversity represents a major environmental threat. It is important that the USDA's organic program address the biodiversity impacts of agriculture through full implementation of this standard. The National Organic Program (NOP) should make a concerted effort to educate farmers, inspectors, certifiers, and the NOP staff on their roles in implementing this standard. In addition, NOP must revise its accreditation checklist so that NOP auditors are verifying that certifiers and farmers are actually using the biodiversity standard. Defenders of Wildlife considers biodiversity conservation a key element of organic practices. In 2005, Defenders staff collaborated with Wild Farm Alliance and other groups in the development of handbooks addressing practical implementation issues for farmers and certifiers. These handbooks provide information on specific conservation practices that support biodiversity and clearly illustrate that applying the standard is both relevant to and practicable in organic production systems. Biodiversity conservation is an important issue for organics consumers, and many assume their organic food purchases are already in compliance with this standard. Please recognize the importance of this issue by advocating that the National Organic Program implement and enforce the biodiversity and natural resources conservation standard.
