As a constituent concerned about climate change, and its impact on my community, I'm writing to oppose the reconsideration of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. For 15 years, this program has provided vital information needed to protect people from global warming and all the damage it brings: worse floods and fires, extreme heat, air pollution and rising insurance costs. So many rely on this information: communities, state and local governments and businesses. How else would anyone know both the sources and scale of pollution that causes climate change, including from oil and gas facilities, landfills and power plants? Eliminating the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program won't make the climate crisis somehow evaporate. It will only make it more expensive and difficult to deal with. It will also undermine public confidence in progress to reduce emissions and eliminate the public's ability to verify claims made by specific companies about their emissions performance. This will put U.S. companies at an unnecessary competitive disadvantage in global markets. EPA's job is to protect human health and the environment. This proposal does neither. Please retain the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to amend the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) to remove program obligations for most source categories, including the distribution segment of the petroleum and natural gas systems source category (subpart W–Petroleum and Natural Gas Systems), and to suspend program obligations for the remaining subpart W segments until reporting year 2034.
