The Environmental Defense Fund and the undersigned strongly oppose efforts to change EPA's science-backed risk characterization for formaldehyde under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Formaldehyde is a dangerous toxic chemical that causes leukemia and other serious health problems, and I'm concerned for the health of my family, children, friends and neighbors if EPA weakens the way it evaluates risk for the chemical. Science has long been settled on formaldehyde: it damages our DNA and there is no safe threshold for exposure to this cancer-causing chemical. For decades, the chemical industry lobby has been working to water down formaldehyde science to weaken protections intended to keep people safe. Under this proposed update to how EPA evaluates risk from formaldehyde, families across the country would be more at risk from serious health problems, including leukemia and other cancers and chronic respiratory illness, because it ignores the risk from cancer and long-term exposure and nearly doubles the amount of formaldehyde that's considered safe to breathe. We rely on EPA to use the Toxic Substances Control Act to protect American families from formaldehyde and other dangerous chemicals. The science on this is clear, and I'm calling on EPA to take action and reverse course: We need to uphold the science supporting strong protections against cancer-causing chemicals.
