The Food and Drug Administration’s Comprehensive, Multi-Year Nutrition Innovation Strategy; Public Meeting; Request for Comments

Dear Sir/Madam: Please see the attached comments regarding horizontal approaches to modernization of standards of identity. In 2016, the International Dairy Foods Association and the National Milk Producers Federation filed joint comments regarding sodium reduction in dairy products. We are including those comments here to show how difficult it will likely be to try to make a change for one food let alone all 290 or so standardized foods at once. A sodium reduction in one food might be limited to it being a taste issue, in cheese however, sodium has many functions including enhancing food safety. And those functions vary with the type of cheese and in some cases its age. We urge you to be thorough and to proceed cautiously. Regards Clay Detlefsen
