Dear Secretary Haaland, President Biden, and Vice President Harris: Thank you for everything you've done to advance bold climate action and expansion of clean energy, especially putting forth the Build Back Better agenda. Please accept these 27,427 public comments from members and activists of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) with recommendations on the proposed plan to lease over a million acres in Cook Inlet, Alaska, to the oil & gas industry. Despite a recent court ruling blocking the administration's pause on new oil and gas leasing, your administration still has a legal obligation to protect the environment and public health, and the authority to cancel the Cook Inlet lease sale and reform its fossil fuel leasing program. We don't have much time left to avoid climate catastrophe. Leasing large chunks of our coastlines will shackle us to the climate-destroying fossil fuels of the past at a time when we must rapidly transition away from fossil fuels and toward a 100% clean energy economy. Please cancel your proposal for drilling in Alaska's Cook Inlet, commit to NO new lease sales along U.S. lands or waters, and double down on efforts to expand clean energy access and reduce our country's carbon emissions. Thank you.

Abstract

Consistent with the regulations implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is announcing its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed 2021 Cook Inlet Lease Sale 258 in the Cook Inlet Planning Area. The EIS will focus on the potential effects of leasing, exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas in the proposed lease sale area. In addition to the no action alternative (i.e., not holding the lease sale), other alternatives will be considered.
