Feb 19, 2026· Comment from Natural Resources Defense Council· BOEM-2025-0483-5920

Dear Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Please accept these 29,333 public comments from members and activists of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in reference to Docket # BOEM-2025-0483. I am very concerned about your draft offshore drilling plan to open over a billion acres of federal waters off the coast of California, Florida, Alaska, and the Gulf to reckless oil and gas drilling. The U.S. already has more than enough energy to meet demand. But if we didn't, last summer Congress also mandated that an unprecedented 36 offshore oil and gas lease sales be held over the next 15 years. We don't need more oil, and certainly not at such great risk to our economy and environment. Coastal communities and economies are too valuable to put at risk of oil spills and other offshore drilling impacts. Fishermen are especially hit hard whenever there is an oil spill risk. After the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, the Gulf of Mexico commercial fishing industry lost around $247 million and thousands of jobs. Offshore oil and gas development threatens endangered whales like beluga whales in Alaska's Cook Inlet and Rice's whales in the Gulf, while generating toxic air pollution that harms our health and drives more climate change-fueled extreme weather events. Reverse course and do not open up our waters to oil and gas drilling. Thank you. Sincerely, Margaret Tran Ramadhar National Digital Advocacy Campaign Manager, NRDC
