Dear EPA Administrator Regan, Please accept these 9,428 public comments from members and online activists of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) urging you to allow states to set and enforce stricter emission standards for heavy duty vehicles than the federal limits by fully granting California's waiver requests. These standards are essential to keeping our air clean and protecting the health of our communities. Heavy-duty vehicles are a major source of NOx and particulate matter, which are extremely harmful to public health. They are associated with increased risk of premature deaths, hospitalization, and ER visits. These health risks are especially prominent in communities of color and low-income communities that tend to live closest to major freight routes. Doctors have even labeled these communities "diesel death zones" due to these extreme impacts. Not only are the California standards critical to improving our air quality and public health, but they are also based on strong data. The standards are derived from years of rigorous research and analysis demonstrating that the new requirements are not only technically feasible but cost-effective methods of emissions reduction. Again, we urge you to fully grant California the waiver to enforce these strong, much-needed standards. Thank you.
