Dear Director Aurelia Skipwith and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services officials: Please accept for filing in Docket ID No.: FWS-HQ-ES-2019-0115 the attached 28,960 public comments from members and online activists of the Natural Resources Defense Council calling on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services to strengthen the Endangered Species Act. We are deeply disappointed by your proposed plans to further weaken the Endangered Species Act by prioritizing fossil fuel industry profits over the survival of our nation's endangered species. If implemented, your proposal would make it easier to sacrifice endangered species habitat to fossil fuel development and other industrial polluters — threatening countless endangered species and their homes, all to drive dirty energy profits for the oil industry. Imperiled species are not 'lost profits' on a ledger — they are valued creatures in need of a home. The ESA is a bedrock law that has saved 99 percent of listed plants and animals from extinction, including iconic species like the bald eagle and gray wolf. If endangered species are going to recover, we must protect and restore the places they need to live, pay attention to the climate science, and do more to strengthen, not weaken, our nation's best tool for helping to prevent extinction. That's why we vehemently OPPOSE this proposal and urge you to protect endangered species and their habitats, not the fossil fuel industry, by withdrawing this reckless plan. Thank you.
