Sep 18, 2025· Comment from Natural Resources Defense Council· FWS-HQ-IA-2024-0033-0428

NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council) combines the power of more than 3 million members and online activists with the expertise of some 700 scientists, lawyers, and other environmental specialists to confront the climate crisis, protect the planet's wildlife and wild places, and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC has been engaged in CITES for decades and will be sending international and US-based staff to COP20. NRDC's views are based on the best available scientific information regarding the scale and scope of the biodiversity crisis, its drivers, and the need for transformative change to secure life as we know it for future generations. NRDC hereby submits the attached comments to the United States, focusing on the kind of ambition needed at CITES in light of the biodiversity crisis. We look forward to providing more input at the CoP on the necessity of increasing protections across the board and on issues we have not identified here. Please contact Zak Smith (zsmith@nrdc.org) and Paul Todd (ptodd@nrdc.org) with any questions about the contents of this document.
