On behalf of the Surfrider Foundation's Outer Banks Chapter and its 200+ members, I urge BOEM to prohibit all seismic testing off the Atlantic. With no lease sales scheduled for the next five years, there is no reason to risk the ecological damages to marine life or economic damages to commercial and recreational fishermen that will face restricted access to areas and potential changes in fishing behavior. (Seismic blasts also drive away fish, drastically cutting commercial fishing production. Studies have shown that seismic testing could potentially harm commercially valuable fisheries by decreasing catch rates by as much as 80% percent.) Furthermore, the vast bulk of coastal communities overwhelmingly oppose to offshore petroleum exploration and seismic testing 97 communities up and down the Atlantic coast have officially passed resolutions opposing seismic testing and offshore drilling, including Dare County and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau making this initial step a direct conflict of interest to the residents who live on the coast and depend on a clean, healthy ocean to survive. In short, there is no reason to inflict damage on our coastal ecology and economy for an industry that the existing population has no interest in pursuing.
