As a Surfrider member I strongly support the designation of a new national marine sanctuary off the central California coast. This designation should be named Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary in recognition of the history and culture of the Chumash people. The sanctuary should prohibit any oil and gas exploration, development or production. It should also prohibit seabed mining, ocean dumping and other activities harmful to the seafloor, cultural resources and marine ecosystem. The sanctuary should protect water quality from pollution sources including cruise ships, commercial vessels and agricultural runoff. Furthermore, Indigenous Collaborative Management should be applied in an equitable manner to empower the Chumash Nation and other Indigenous Peoples to steward these invaluable resources. Please take this into consideration when making your decision. We do not get a second chance to protect our coastal waters. The time to act is now. Thank you.

Abstract

NOAA proposes to designate Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary (CHNMS) in the waters along and offshore of the coast of central California to recognize the national significance of the area’s ecological, historical, archaeological, and cultural resources and to manage this special place as part of the National Marine Sanctuary System.
