The American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) appreciates the opportunity to provide comment to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) following their third public meeting on September 13th, 2023. From manufacturers to distributors to suppliers to packagers, AFFI is proud to represent publicly traded and family-owned companies who help produce frozen foods and beverages for today's food service and retail marketplace and serve as economic pillars within their communities throughout the U.S. The frozen food industry contributes approximately $72 billion to U.S. sales and accounts for 670,000 U.S. jobs. In addition to our members' strong role in economic growth, AFFI members share a commitment to food safety and improving access to nutritious foods which can support nutrition and food security, disease prevention, and health promotion. AFFI has a significant interest in the DGAC's work in reviewing the evidence and providing recommendations for the upcoming Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). In the comments that follow we provide our perspective on the questions the DGAC is tasked with reviewing and synthesizing and our recommendations on the future work of the committee. We provide two main recommendations: 1) the DGAC should not proceed with recommendations about level of food processing as part of dietary recommendations and 2) the DGAC should recognize the importance of frozen foods in helping achieve a nutritious dietary pattern and advancing health equity. Abstract

The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture announce the first meeting of the newly appointed 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (Committee). This meeting will be open to the public virtually. Additionally, this notice opens a public comment period that will remain open until late 2024, throughout the Committee’s deliberations.
